Where photography takes me.
Wow, It’s been a few months since I wrote a blog post. If I’m going to be honest, writing is one of my favourite forms of expression, second to photography, of course.
Fun fact: When I was in my mid-twenties, I wrote and published 5 books and that’s what got me into photography. A lot of people don’t know that. I was just trying to better promote the books, so I started to learn photography and made an Instagram account. Next thing you know, I was shooting stuff for companies and now here we are. It’s been a wild ride. From shooting supercars and campaigns for big chains to having a boudoir studio in S.E. Saskatchewan.
I guess that brings me to my point. Boudoir photography is something that I’ve come to be quite fond of. The creativity to explore themes and locations is amazing and the connections made on these shoots is incredible. I’ve heard it described as a fun therapy session and I couldn’t agree more. All this to say that things will be expanding this year for Maison Boudoir. I’m hitting the road(and air) to do shoots in Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. It’s so exciting to even be receiving inquiries from these locations. I knew when I first decided to shoot boudoir that I wanted it to be a Canada-wide boudoir photography experience. To travel and host “retreat-like” photography experiences across this beautiful country of ours, starting with a few key cities and expanding to some more remote places. I didn’t really know how I was going to make it happen. I just knew that’s what it had to become.
Boudoir photography has been a growing hot topic over the past few years, emerging from the once-taboo form of photography into the beloved form of self-expression it is today. It’s so nice to be able to tap into the rawest form of someone and show them in this new light. Let me tell you, the best thing ever is when you nail a shot, flip the camera so they can sneak a peek and they get that look of disbelief on their face.
Imagine a genre of photography that one day you can be shooting on a ranch-style set and the next, renting a Porsche to do a car-girl shoot. Then onto mudding with a group of friends and off to a waterfall in beautiful B.C. Not only do you get to do this all, but unlike corporate shooting for brands, you actually get to make connections with the models and hear about their stories. I couldn’t really ask for anything more.
So, while this post is a bit of a ramble about boudoir photography, I think it’s also a thank you. A thank you to everyone who has stepped in front of my camera. A thank you to everyone that follows along and shares the content we produce. A thank you to those in my inner circle that continue to put up with my crazy ideas and constant working. Finally, it’s a thank you to growing up and learning that even the most outrageous jobs exist.
Boy, if 15 year old James could see me now.
Thanks for reading,
James
